Drug & Alcohol Rehab Serving Santa Monica
Licensed detox and residential care over the Sepulveda Pass, plus outpatient and sober living to bridge the return to Santa Monica.
Santa Monica has a way of pulling you back in. The bars along Main Street, the patios off the Promenade, the friends you always meet near the pier — it is a walkable, social city, and that is part of what makes it home. It can also make the return from treatment harder than people expect.
Reggie’s Recovery Center provides licensed medical detox and residential treatment at our Sun Valley campus, over the Sepulveda Pass in the San Fernando Valley, with outpatient programming at Reggie’s Treatment Center in South Los Angeles. If you or someone you love lives in Santa Monica, one of the most important decisions comes near the end of residential care: go straight home, or spend time in sober living first. This page is built around that question.

Why does treatment close to Santa Monica make sense?
A campus on the other side of the Santa Monica Mountains gives you a clean break from the beach-city routine — no running into friends on Montana Avenue, no regular happy hour, no familiar delivery apps on your phone in the first stretch of care. At the same time, it is well within reach for a partner, parent or roommate who wants to join a family session.
Staying in Los Angeles also means your outpatient care, sober living and aftercare can be part of one continuous plan with one clinical team, rather than a hand-off between strangers. That continuity is especially valuable during the weeks after residential treatment, when most of the hard decisions get made.
Should you go to sober living or straight home after treatment?
There is no single right answer, and your care team will help you decide. But it helps to understand what each choice really involves before discharge day arrives.
Going straight home
- Familiar space, your own schedule and privacy
- Works best when home is stable and substance-free
- Requires a strong outpatient and meeting plan from day one
- Old triggers — people, places, routines — are close by
- Lower cost, since there is no rent elsewhere
Sober living first
- A substance-free home with a house manager on-site
- Weekly house meetings, curfews or check-ins, and random testing
- Housemates who are also working on recovery
- Required outpatient or 12-step attendance builds the habit
- Usually paid out of pocket; insurance generally does not cover housing
Questions to ask yourself
- Is anyone at home drinking or using? Are there substances in the house?
- How quickly did use return the last time you tried to stop on your own?
- Are your evenings mostly unstructured? Is your social life built around bars or parties?
- Do you have people at home who understand recovery and can be honest with you?
- Do you feel confident, or are you hoping home will be easier than it was before?
If several of those answers make you uneasy, sober living may give you a safer bridge. Many people use it for 30 to 90 days while attending PHP or IOP, and some stay much longer. It is a step toward home, not a detour away from it.
What sober living looks like at Reggie’s
Our sober living homes include furnished private or shared rooms, utilities and Wi-Fi, chores, house meetings and alumni events, with transportation coordination to outpatient sessions. Stays range from 30 days to 12 months or longer. One option is our Glendale Hills residence, with an indoor pool and spa, a cedar sauna and views of downtown Los Angeles. If a relapse happens while you are living there, the typical response is a return to a higher level of care, not simply being sent away.
If you do go home
Going home can absolutely work. Make it deliberate: line up IOP before discharge, clear alcohol and leftover pills out of the house, tell one or two people what you need, and plan your first few evenings in detail. Our sober living guide covers the trade-offs in more depth.
What does substance use look like in Santa Monica and LA County?
Santa Monica is an independent city inside Los Angeles County, and county agencies track overdose and treatment trends across the Westside along with every other area. LA County Public Health has reported that fentanyl and methamphetamine are now involved in a large share of the county’s overdose deaths, and it has warned that pills bought outside a pharmacy may contain fentanyl. Current figures are on the LA County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control site and the California Overdose Surveillance Dashboard.
For families, that means the stakes of a relapse after treatment can be higher than before, because tolerance drops during time away from substances. That is one more reason the plan for life after residential care deserves real attention.
What levels of care can Santa Monica residents use?
- Medical detox, typically 5–10 days, with 24/7 nursing, an on-call physician and private suites in Sun Valley.
- Residential treatment, 30–90 days, on the same campus.
- PHP and IOP at Reggie’s Treatment Center in South Los Angeles, with day and evening tracks.
- Sober living while you attend outpatient care.
- Medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine or naltrexone where appropriate — methadone is not offered.
- Dual-diagnosis care with on-staff psychiatric support.

How do you get from Santa Monica to Sun Valley?
Take I-10 east to I-405 north, then climb through the Sepulveda Pass into the San Fernando Valley. From there, US-101 east to SR-170 north brings you toward Sun Valley. Without heavy traffic, the drive is roughly 35–50 minutes; the 405 through the pass is famously slow at rush hour, so midday visits are usually easier. Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is about 10–15 minutes from our campus if relatives are flying in.
The outpatient center on W. Manchester Ave is in South Los Angeles near Inglewood, generally an easier daily trip from the Westside than the Valley. If getting to admission is a problem, our team can coordinate transportation.
What recovery resources are around Santa Monica?
- LA County Substance Abuse Service Helpline (SASH): 1-844-804-7500, 24/7.
- SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-4357, free and confidential.
- Meetings: Santa Monica and the Westside have many recovery meetings; search AA, NA or SMART Recovery, and Al-Anon for family members.
Before discharge, your case manager helps you pick specific meetings and outpatient times so your first week home — or in sober living — is already planned.
How do Santa Monica residents pay for care?
Most major PPO plans are accepted, and detox, residential and outpatient care are often covered at least in part depending on your plan. Sober living housing is usually not covered by insurance, though the clinical programming you attend while there often is. Verification is free, takes about 15–30 minutes and does not involve your employer. Self-pay and financing can be discussed. See the insurance page or the Insurance Decoder.
