Drug & Alcohol Rehab Serving Hollywood

Medically supervised opioid detox and medication-assisted treatment, roughly 20–35 minutes from Hollywood through the Cahuenga Pass.

Hollywood is where a lot of Los Angeles comes to chase something — a role, a band, a fresh start. It is also a neighborhood where people have watched friends struggle with heroin, pressed pills and fentanyl. If you live between the Cahuenga Pass and the edge of Griffith Park and opioids have become part of your life, or the life of someone you love, there is effective, evidence-based help a short drive away.

Reggie's Recovery Center runs licensed medical detox and residential care on a hilltop campus in Sun Valley, roughly 20–35 minutes north of Hollywood. For outpatient care, our Reggie's Treatment Center on W. Manchester Ave in South Los Angeles offers PHP and IOP. This page focuses on what people in Hollywood most often ask us about: getting off heroin or fentanyl safely, and how medication-assisted treatment fits in.

How is heroin or fentanyl addiction treated with medication?

Opioid use disorder changes how the brain handles reward, stress and pain. That is why "just stopping" so rarely holds: withdrawal is miserable, cravings can last for months, and the risk of relapse is highest right after someone quits. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medication with counseling and behavioral therapy, and SAMHSA and NIDA describe it as an effective, evidence-based approach for opioid use disorder.

Buprenorphine (Suboxone)

Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist. It attaches to the same receptors as heroin or fentanyl but activates them far less, which eases withdrawal and cravings without the same high. It has a "ceiling effect" that lowers the risk of overdose compared with full opioids. Timing matters: starting buprenorphine too soon after the last use can trigger sudden, intense withdrawal. Fentanyl can make that timing harder, because it may linger in the body longer than heroin. In medical detox, physicians and nurses watch symptoms closely and decide when and how to begin.

Naltrexone

Naltrexone works differently: it blocks opioid receptors entirely, so opioids have little effect. It is not habit-forming. It is available as a daily pill or a monthly extended-release injection, which some people prefer because there is nothing to remember each day. Naltrexone generally requires being free of opioids for a period first, so it is often started after detox is complete.

What about methadone?

Methadone is another FDA-approved medication, but it can only be dispensed through federally certified opioid treatment programs. Reggie's does not offer methadone. If your assessment suggests methadone is the better fit, our team will tell you honestly and help you look for appropriate options.

Medication is one part of the plan

MAT works best alongside therapy — CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care and relapse prevention — and support for the things that often travel with opioid use: depression, anxiety, PTSD or chronic pain. Learn more on our pages for medication-assisted treatment, heroin addiction and fentanyl addiction.

Good to know: After detox, your tolerance drops quickly. Using the amount you used before can cause a fatal overdose. That is one reason medication, aftercare and a naloxone kit matter so much in the weeks after treatment.

What do Hollywood families need to know about fentanyl?

Hollywood is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, and Los Angeles County Public Health has reported that fentanyl is now involved in a large share of overdose deaths across the county. Fentanyl has been found in powders sold as heroin or cocaine and in counterfeit pills made to look like oxycodone or Xanax. People who think they are using something else may be exposed without knowing it.

  • Carry naloxone. Narcan nasal spray is sold over the counter. It can reverse an opioid overdose and will not harm someone who has not taken opioids.
  • Never use alone. If someone is going to use, having another person present who can call 911 and give naloxone can save a life.
  • Know the signs: pinpoint pupils, blue or gray lips, gurgling or very slow breathing, and not responding to voice or touch.

You can explore county and state data through LA County SAPC and the California Overdose Surveillance Dashboard.

Why choose treatment near Hollywood rather than in it?

When dealers, using friends and familiar corners are a few blocks from your apartment, early recovery is fragile. Detox and residential care in Sun Valley — a quiet, residential hillside on the far side of the Santa Monica Mountains — puts real distance between you and those cues, while keeping you close enough that family and friends from Hollywood can visit.

When you are ready to step down, you have two Reggie's locations to work with. Outpatient PHP and IOP run at Reggie's Treatment Center on W. Manchester Ave in South Los Angeles, with the same clinical team as residential care, so your medication management and therapy can continue without starting over.

What does a typical path through care look like?

  1. Days 1–10Medical detox

Assessment, comfort medications, and a decision on starting buprenorphine or planning for naltrexone. 24/7 nursing; on-call physician.

  2. 30–90 daysResidential treatment

Individual and group therapy, family sessions, and dual-diagnosis care while medication is stabilized.

  3. 4–6 weeksPHP

Day programming five to six days a week at the Manchester Ave outpatient center.

  4. 8–12 weeksIOP

Three-hour sessions, three to five days a week, morning or evening.

  5. OngoingSober living and aftercare

Optional sober living, continued MAT, meetings and alumni support.

These are typical ranges, not a fixed schedule. Your care team adjusts the plan based on how you are doing. Some people with prescription opioid dependence move faster; others need more time.

How do I get from Hollywood to Sun Valley?

Take US-101 north through the Cahuenga Pass, past Universal City, and continue onto SR-170 north into Sun Valley. Without heavy traffic, the drive is roughly 20–35 minutes. Weekday evenings through the pass can be slow, so family members often visit on weekends.

Please do not drive yourself if you are in withdrawal or have recently used. Admissions can coordinate transportation. Out-of-town family can fly into Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), about 10–15 minutes from the campus.

Where can I find help in and around Hollywood?

If someone may be overdosing: call 911, give naloxone if you have it, and stay with them. Go to the nearest emergency room, such as Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, for any medical emergency. For a mental-health crisis, call or text 988.
  • LA County SASH: 1-844-804-7500, 24/7 screening and referrals.
  • SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-4357, free and confidential.
  • Meetings: NA, AA and SMART Recovery; Al-Anon for family members.

Before discharge, we help line up continued medication management, outpatient therapy and meetings that fit your life back in Hollywood.

It can be. Fentanyl may stay in the body longer, which can affect when buprenorphine is safe to start and how withdrawal unfolds. That is why opioid detox should be medically supervised, with nurses monitoring symptoms around the clock and a physician adjusting the plan.

Some people can. If you are medically stable and have a safe home environment, PHP or IOP at our W. Manchester Ave center may be appropriate, often with ongoing MAT. Most people coming off heroin or fentanyl start with medical detox first. An assessment will help determine the safest starting point.
