What is meth detox?
Meth detox is the period when methamphetamine leaves your body and your brain begins adjusting to life without it. Because meth withdrawal is mostly psychological, detox is less about managing dangerous physical symptoms and more about getting safely through the crash, protecting your mood and keeping you away from meth while cravings are strongest.
Medical detox adds clinical eyes to that process. A nurse is there through the night when sleep will not come. Someone notices if low mood turns into hopelessness, or if paranoia is getting worse instead of better. And when you are ready, the next step in treatment is already arranged. You can read a detailed symptom timeline on our meth withdrawal page.
Inpatient detox is strongly worth considering if you have been using daily or in multi-day runs, have had paranoia or hallucinations, feel severely depressed or have thoughts of self-harm, also use alcohol, sedatives or opioids, or have tried to stop on your own without success.
Where can I get meth detox in Los Angeles?
Reggie's Recovery offers inpatient medical detox and residential treatment at our campus at 9250 Del Arroyo Dr in Sun Valley, in the San Fernando Valley. Set on a quiet hilltop with views toward the San Gabriel Mountains, it is far enough from the city's noise to feel like a reset and close enough to reach easily from Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, the Valley and greater Los Angeles.
That distance matters with meth. Recovery is easier when the people, places and routines tied to use are out of reach. If you need help getting here, our team can coordinate transportation. See the communities we serve on our areas we serve page.

What happens in the first 72 hours of meth detox?
Hours 0 to 12: assessment and settling in
A nurse takes your vitals and the team completes an initial assessment, including bloodwork and a mental-health screening. You will be asked about how long and how much you have used, other substances, sleep, eating, mood and any history of psychosis or self-harm. The goal is a plan that fits you.
Hours 12 to 48: the crash
Many people sleep for very long stretches and wake up ravenous. Others feel restless and anxious. Nursing staff check on you regularly, monitor vital signs and track your mood. Chef-prepared meals and fluids begin rebuilding a body that may have gone days without real nourishment.
Hours 48 to 72: mood and cravings surface
As exhaustion lifts, depression, irritability and cravings often become more noticeable. This is when support matters most. Light counseling begins once you are stable, and with your consent, the team can update your family.
How is meth psychosis handled in detox?
Some people arrive with paranoia, hallucinations or fixed false beliefs after heavy use and little sleep. For many, these symptoms ease with rest and time away from meth, but they need careful watching. In detox, that typically means:
- A calm, low-stimulation environment and staff trained in trauma-informed care
- Frequent check-ins by nursing staff and an on-call physician
- Psychiatric evaluation when symptoms are significant or do not fade as expected
- Psychiatric medication management when clinically appropriate
- Attention to safety for you and everyone around you
If psychosis persists, the team works to understand whether it is a lingering meth effect or a separate condition such as bipolar disorder. Our dual-diagnosis program, with an evaluation by our Medical Director and on-staff psychiatric care, continues that work after detox.
What comfort care helps during meth detox?
| Common challenge | How care typically helps |
|---|---|
| Extreme fatigue | A private suite, quiet nights and regular nursing check-ins while you rest |
| Insomnia after the crash | Sleep routines and, where appropriate, comfort medications chosen by your care team |
| Hunger and depletion | Chef-prepared meals, hydration and attention to nutrition |
| Anxiety and agitation | Calm surroundings, supportive staff and clinical review of symptoms |
| Depression and anhedonia | Mental-health monitoring, counseling and psychiatric input |
| Skin and dental problems | Medical attention to sores and referral guidance for dental follow-up |
We do not publish medication names or doses, because comfort care is set individually by the medical team based on your assessment and history.
Is there medication for meth detox?
According to NIDA, there is currently no FDA-approved medication for methamphetamine use disorder. Research is ongoing, but no medication treats meth addiction the way buprenorphine treats opioid addiction.
Medication can still help with specific symptoms such as anxiety, agitation or insomnia, and with co-occurring conditions such as depression or ADHD. If opioids are also part of the picture, medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine (Suboxone) or naltrexone may be considered for the opioid side. If alcohol is involved, naltrexone and other FDA-approved alcohol-recovery medications may be considered. Reggie's does not offer methadone.
How long does meth detox take?
Inpatient detox at Reggie's typically lasts 5 to 10 days. With meth, length depends mostly on how quickly sleep, eating, mood and thinking stabilize, whether psychosis is present, and whether other substances are involved.
It helps to think of detox as the first chapter, not the whole book. Meth's lingering effects on mood and motivation often last weeks to months, which is why going straight home after detox carries a high risk of relapse. Your care team will recommend the next level of care before detox ends.
Does insurance cover meth detox?
Substance use disorder treatment is an essential health benefit under the Affordable Care Act, and many PPO plans cover medical detox and follow-up treatment for meth use disorder at least in part, depending on your plan. Reggie's works primarily with PPO plans. HMO coverage for our level of care is more limited, but we can point you toward resources. We generally don't accept Medi-Cal, but if that's your coverage we'll connect you with a provider who does.
Verification is free and usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Start on our insurance page or try the free Insurance Decoder. Sober living is usually not covered by insurance, though the clinical programming that goes with it often is.
What happens after meth detox?
Because the brain needs time to recover from meth, many people do best with a longer, step-by-step plan rather than a short program and a return home. A typical path looks like this, adjusted to your assessment:
| Stage | Focus | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Residential treatment | Daily therapy, dual-diagnosis care and a steady daily rhythm in Sun Valley | 30 to 90 days, extended by clinical need |
| PHP and IOP | Therapy several days a week at Reggie's Treatment Center while practicing real-life skills | About 4 to 6 weeks (PHP); 8 to 12 weeks (IOP) |
| Sober living | House structure, random testing and community while life rebuilds | 30 days to 12+ months |
Therapy after detox draws on approaches named across our programs, including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care and relapse prevention, supported by yoga, meditation, fitness and nutrition counseling. NIDA describes behavioral therapies as the evidence base for stimulant use disorders. Learn how the full program works on our meth rehab page.

Meth Detox Questions
Not everyone does, but many people benefit. Inpatient detox is strongly worth considering if you use daily or in multi-day runs, have had paranoia or hallucinations, feel severely depressed or have thoughts of self-harm, also use alcohol or sedatives, or have tried to quit on your own. A free assessment with admissions can help you decide what level of care fits.
Inpatient detox at Reggie's typically lasts 5 to 10 days. The exact length depends on how quickly your sleep, eating and mood stabilize, whether psychosis is present and whether other substances are involved. Most people move straight from detox into residential treatment, because meth's effects on mood can last weeks to months.
We do not recommend it. Meth withdrawal is rarely physically life-threatening, but severe depression, suicidal thoughts and psychosis can appear, cravings are strongest when meth is within reach, and relapse after a break raises overdose risk, especially with fentanyl in the supply. A supervised setting is the safest way through the crash.
There is no FDA-approved medication for methamphetamine use disorder, according to NIDA. In detox, your care team may use comfort medications where appropriate for anxiety, agitation or sleep, and may treat co-occurring conditions such as depression. If opioids or alcohol are involved, medication-assisted treatment may be considered for those. Plans are set individually.
Wait for a calmer moment if it is safe to, ideally after they have slept, and speak with care rather than accusation. If they are violent, threatening or medically unwell, call 911. If they talk about suicide, call or text 988. You can call our admissions team yourself for guidance, and our family resources can help you plan next steps.
