What to Expect in Rehab: A Day-by-Day Guide to Your First Week

Fear of the unknown is one of the biggest barriers to getting help. Here's exactly what happens when you arrive — so nothing catches you off guard.

Many people delay getting help for addiction — not because they don't want to recover, but because they don't know what rehab actually looks like. The images in their head are often wrong: sterile hospital rooms, cold clinical staff, loss of dignity and privacy.

The reality at Reggie's is very different. Here's what your first week actually looks like.

Before You Arrive: The Admissions Call

Everything begins with a phone call. Our admissions counselors — real people, not call center scripts — will ask about your substance use history, current situation, and insurance. Within 15–30 minutes, we'll have a benefits verification and a plan. Most clients are admitted the same day they call.

If you need transportation, we coordinate that too. You don't have to figure out logistics alone.

Day 1: Arrival & Assessment

When you arrive, you'll be welcomed by a member of our clinical team. No one will make you feel judged or processed. Within the first few hours, you'll have:

  • A medical intake evaluation (bloodwork, vitals, medical history)
  • A psychosocial assessment with a counselor
  • A brief orientation to the facility and schedule
  • Your own private room

If you're entering medical detox, your clinical team will establish a detox protocol based on your assessment. Comfort medications begin promptly.

Days 2–4: Medical Detox Phase

These are often the most physically challenging days — but with our medical protocols, most clients report they were far more manageable than expected. You'll be monitored around the clock. Nurses check in frequently. Comfort medications are adjusted based on how you're feeling.

You won't be expected to "push through" in silence. If something is uncomfortable, we address it.

During this phase, programming is light. Rest and physical stabilization come first. Light reading, gentle walks, and quiet time are encouraged.

Day 4–5: Emerging from Detox

By days 4–5, most clients begin to feel dramatically better. Appetite returns. Sleep improves. Mental clarity begins to return. This is when the therapeutic work starts to shift into focus.

You'll have your first deeper conversation with your primary therapist — discussing your history, goals, and what you want treatment to accomplish. Your individualized treatment plan is formalized.

Days 5–7: Entering the Residential Routine

By the end of the first week, most clients have found their footing. A typical day now looks like:

  • 7:00am — Wake up, breakfast (chef-prepared)
  • 9:00am — Morning group therapy
  • 11:00am — Individual therapy session
  • 12:30pm — Lunch
  • 2:00pm — Educational group or skills workshop
  • 3:30pm — Holistic activity (yoga, meditation, art)
  • 5:30pm — Dinner
  • 7:00pm — 12-step meeting or community time
  • 9:00pm — Wind down, journaling, reading
  • 10:30pm — Lights out

What You Might Feel in Week One

Emotions in the first week can be intense and varied. Relief at finally getting help. Grief. Anxiety. Moments of hope followed by moments of doubt. Physical discomfort followed by physical relief. All of this is normal. Your clinical team is experienced in supporting clients through exactly this emotional terrain.

What About Family Contact?

Phone access is typically limited in the first few days to support full immersion in treatment. By the end of the first week, supervised phone calls are generally available. Family therapy and visits are coordinated based on your clinical plan.

The Most Important Thing to Know

You will be safe. You will not be alone. You will not be judged. The people around you — staff and peers alike — are there because they believe recovery is possible. That belief, consistently experienced, is one of the most powerful therapeutic forces in early recovery.

The hardest part is walking through the door. After that, you realize you made the right decision.
